LARR KELLY

My name is Larr Kelly. I live in Leesburg, VA where I have lived since 1986. I was born in Washington, D.C. and raised in Northern Virginia. I hold degrees from the University of Virginia and Vermont Law School. I am now retired from my law career.

For over 30 years I have been involved in fine art photography, either through my studies with Eliot Cohen, the Art League School, and the Smithsonian Institution, or through a series of one man shows and various group shows. I have exhibited at a number of venues in and around the Washington, D.C. area, including the George Washington University in Ashburn, Photoworks, District West Fine Art and Gallery 222 in Leesburg, 8 Chains North Winery in Purcellville, Crooked Run Brewery in Sterling, and in a number of juried shows in the D.C. Metropolitan area, most recently at the Tryst Gallery in Leesburg, the Artists in Middleburg Gallery in Middleburg, VA and the Waterford Fair Photography Exposition in Waterford, VA. In addition to Leesburg, my "Lights" series was shown in Santa Barbara, CA and at the State Capitol building in Richmond, VA. My work has also been accepted multiple times into the Joseph A. Miller Abstract Photography Exhibit at the Center for Photographic Arts in Gainesville, VA. More recently, in 2021 and 2022, I have had pieces juried into the virtual "Abstract Catalyst" and "Abstract Sanctuary" Exhibitions at the Verum Ultimum Gallery in Portland. OR, the 2021 virtual exhibit of "Abstract" at Art Fluent in Boston, MA, and inclusion in the January 2022 edition of Artistonish magazine.

I have worked in both black and white and in color, but with the conversion to digital my work has been mostly in color. I believe that my strength lies in my eye, frequently finding interest in patterns and details in the natural and built environments. My sources for images are widespread and greatly augmented by my love of travel. My images encompass the contrasts, colors, energies and vibrations in the world. I am influenced by modern abstract art, pop art, and 1960s psychedelia, and I attempt to incorporate similar aesthetics in my work. In my images I strive to capture the beautiful interplay of light, shadow, color and line which create the patterns and details existing around us, on both micro and macro levels. I often amplify the vibrational quality created by such interplay through the effects available through editing software, primarily Photoshop.

I am inspired by Wassily Kandinsky's theory that abstract art, through colors, shapes, and lines, reflects the inner vibrations of the soul. Whether the source is natural or man-made I believe that my best images begin with a connection between the vibration of what I am shooting and my own inner vibration. It is my hope that a viewer can sense this vibration and get a feeling from an image in addition to seeing it.

I find that the images I create do reflect certain vibrations. Some are high energy and some are quiet energy. Different images will do better in certain settings, depending on whether it is a quiet space or an active space. In all of the images I create, however, I attempt to create something of beauty that captures my vision, and which will be something for the viewer to see, feel and enjoy.

I have now collected my work into a series of books: The Water Series, Lights, Flowers In Wonderland, Black and White in Color, The Silver Lining Collection, The Silver Lining Collection, Vol 2, and Flowerworks. I am sure these will eventually be joined by others.
